Vegan Cupcakes – Clara’s Cakes, did we mention she is 13!

Clara’sCakes was started by 12 year old Clara when she decided to become  a vegan and realized that finding a good vegan baked good was hard to do.  She spent many months doing research and kitchen experiments and came up with her own vegan cupcake creation.

Her cupcakes use no animal ingredients of any kind, no eggs, no honey – NOTHING!  Since we couldn’t taste the cupcakes, we were curious to know how good the cupcakes were – and we found this blog post:

http://www.quarrygirl.com/2010/11/14/vegan-cupcakes-from-claras-cakes/

Then we also found this great interview with Clara at:

http://www.elephantjournal.com/2010/08/is-a-13-year-old-more-ethical-than-you/

Sounds to us like they are pretty awesome!

And she does more than cupcakes – there are Rice Crispy Treats, Brownies and Pies too!

You can contact them through the website at Clara’s Cakes to find out about ordering some of Clara’s Cakes. She is based out of California for those that are in the area!

I like that she uses products that don’t come from animals.  :-)

Cupcake Cuties

Cupcake Cuties is a great idea! You can create custom cupcakes without spending a lot of money.

You can order a kit from Cupcake Cuties that will include everything you need! The bunny is perfect for Easter and the kit comes with face which is a sleeve that slides over the cupcake holder and the pipe cleaners for the ears.

Another great example is the Santa Face which comes with 24 Santa face sleeves, white jimmies, red food coloring and marshmallows.

Aren’t they neat?

You can view more of their great ideas at Cupcake Cuties!

These would make a great gift for any little baker like me – and I know my friends at school would love to have these at their next class party!

Make Your Own Gummies!

I love gummies. I never really thought about how I could make my own, but my Mom found a company called Verve Inc that makes kits that let you make different treats at home. They have Make Your Own Chocolate, Make Your Own Chewing Gum and Make Your Own Gummies.

They also make a gum called Glee Gum which was very good and it’s all natural and eco-friendly!

I got to test out the Make Your Own Gummy kit and the first thing I found weird was that is used seaweed. Yuck.
But you don’t even taste it. I made a video so you can see how to make it. It was pretty easy and lots of fun. The fun part is you can really make them any shape you want and can be creative with it. I did gummy worms for the video. Best part? They were REALLY good!

You can me them sweet or sour too – I like a bit of both!

Here is the video if you want to watch how they are made. And if you want to get a kit, visit Glee Gum Make Your Own Candy Kits!

What’s New Cupcake?

I was at Target with my Mom and saw the best cupcake book ever! What’s New, Cupcake?: Ingeniously Simple Designs for Every Occasion

I like it so much. It has a lot of great cupcake ideas that I have never seen before like one called Ants on a Picnic. Chocolate cake with green frosting, candy watermelon slices and little chocolate ants make it look so real.

The recipes seemed pretty easy. I have not made any yet, but will soon!

Here is the book.

If you get it – I would love to see the cupcakes you make.

The Best of Monmouth Summer Festival

I am excited to go to The Best of Monmouth Summer Festival tonite with my Mom and Dad.

There will be lots of local restaurants there that we will get to taste food from. I know Surf Taco will be there and my Daddy loves Surf Taco.  I can’t wait to try Suzi’s Sweet Shoppe and the place that sells the fancy ice cream!

I have my notebook ready and will write some posts later this week with my favorite places – I will have pictures of all the cool food too.

I know these are way too hard for me to make – but i hope when I am older I can do it!

Bakerella used Red Velvet Cake, I haven’t tried that yet  and mixed it with blue food coloring! I LOVE the color! Check out the batter in this picture – neat isn’t it?

I wish my mom could make these with me – but she is not that good in the kitchen. (Don’t tell her I said that though!!!!)

If you have an adult who can bake – I bet your Daddy would LOVE these for Father’s Day!!!!

Here is a link to the whole recipe Bakerella Superhero Cupcake Pops!

PLEASE share a picture or even better a video with us if you make these – we would love to see what you can do!

Kool Aid – Not Just For Drinking

I love to cook – but I also love science!Kool Aid Playdoh

Here is a fun way to use both -  it is called Kool-Aid Playdough!

Ask your Mom to get these items:

  • 1 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 1 pkg unsweetened Kool-aid (just the dry koolaid, don’t mix it into juice)
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp vegetable oil

And then do this:

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, salt and kool-aid.
  2. Stir in water and oil
  3. Knead with hands for about 5 minutes.
  4. Store in ziploc bag for up to 2 months.
  5. Use like playdough.
  6. Smells wonderful and takes on the color of the Kool-Aid

I love the smell and love the mess I can make!

Have you made this? Can you share pics? I like to see the colors!
